Heard of self driving cars? Now for the self driving truck…
German manufacturer Daimler has successfully produced the first self-driving 18-wheeler HGV to be licensed for commercial use. The vehicle, named the Freightliner Inspiration Truck, has been approved by the U.S. state of Nevada.
The self-driving truck is the perfect solution for drivers who might suffer from fatigue on the road. This is a common problem amongst long-haul lorry drivers and the new vehicle could change the nature of their job. Of course human hands will be required to take over in more complicated situations such as manoeuvring in and out of depots and warehouses but the computerised HGV is perfect for the open road.
Daimler claimed that the autonomous truck has undergone 10,000 miles of testing and wouldn’t be a success unless it was significantly safer than a man-driven vehicle. Due to the nature of truck travel – long stretches of road far removed from complicated congested situations, it is thought that larger autonomous heavy goods vehicles may be more popular than self-driving cars.
