Micromax Overtake Samsung In India Smartphone Market

Samsung have suffered another blow as news is in that Micromax have overtaken Samsung in the India Smartphone Market. Budget smartphone maker Micromax overtook Samsung in the 4th quarter as the leading supplier in India’s booming smartphone market. Research company Canalys provided the news. However, Samsung have disputed the rankings, claiming they were still the leaders in the category with a volume market share of 34.3% in the October-December 2014 quarter, quoting data provided by market research company GK.

Canalys’ Fbruary report claimed that Micromax accounted for 22% of smartphone sales in India in the October-December quarter, with Samsung’s market share at a slightly lower 20%.

Asim Warsi is Samsung’s marketing vice president and he said: “The other report takes into account smartphone shipments. At Samsung we go by retail sales. The number of smartphones we retail in India is more than double than that of the next player.”

The two companies were followed by two other Indian budget smartphone manufacturers, Karbonn and Lava. The figures are based on the number of handsets sold in the final quarter of 2014.
