Police Fear Google Traffic App Waze Helps Cop Killers
U.S. Police are currently attempting to pressurise Google into turning off a particular feature of its traffic App Waze. Although it is an App to let you know where traffic jams are there is a feature that warns drivers where police are with the use of social media. In America they are claiming that this feature could put police officers lives in danger from “cop killers” which is not something we would necessarily think of in the UK but in the United States it is a real concern.
Users of the Waze App can mark police presence on maps. Once this has been marked then the users of the App will see a police icon, although it won’t state whether this is a speed trap or just simply that there are police patrolling the area.
Mike Brown the Sheriff of Bedford County, Virginia, said “The police community needs to coordinate an effort to have the owner, Google, act like the responsible corporate citizen they have always been and remove this feature from the application even before any litigation or statutory action.”
